Free Online Backup
My fiance’s laptop recently crashed, taking a bunch of wedding stuff with it (think vows, response cards, etc). I spent a while trying to recover the data by removing the harddrive from the laptop and attempting to extract the data using a usb-to-ide adapter. Sadly, no luck. The drive literally rattles when you pick it up – not a good sign.
I feel awful because I hadn’t setup any backup system on her computer. I have set up my other personal computers and my parents’ computers to regularly backup all important data to Mozy. They offer 2 GB of free online storage. All you have to do is sign-up for their free account and then download a little application that runs in your tray and syncs your files when you’re not using your computer.
It’s not enough space to backup your entire disk, but it can be a lifesaver for your documents, desktop files, etc. Also, you can log in and browse your backups and even create custom restore archives of the data on the system (for instance, if you just need to grab certain folders from your My Documents backup). And for all of you mac fanboys like me, they even have a Mac OSX client coming out soon (I’m a beta tester, woohoo!).
So if you don’t have a good backup solution already, what are you waiting for?
Disclaimer: I get 250MB of free space for each person I refer, so please use the links above. Alternatively, you can enter my referral code – YJDQX0 – during the registration process.
