Awesome yet Dorky Podcasts

Jed | February 27, 2007

So I feel that not everyone is addicted to podcasts like I am. It’s turned my 30-60 minute commute (each way) into a delight, regardless of traffic. So for the uninitiated masses, I present my list of favorite podcasts. If you aren’t a fan of technology and tech issues, the list is probably not for you.

  • CNet’s Buzz Out Loud – daily podcast on tech issues with lots of humor
    (~30 minutes)
  • This Week in Tech (TWiT) – weekly podcast on tech issues with hilarious tangents
    (45-75 minutes)
  • MacBreak Weekly – Mac related news, rumors, and discussion
    (45-60 minutes)
  • JavaPosse – Java related news, interviews, software picks
    (~60 minutes)

You can Google these and subscribe manually or just subscribe using iTunes. One of these days, I’ll put up my favorite video podcasts (vodcasts?).

Sucks @ Driving: MD 17R-868

Jed | February 1, 2007

I’m starting a new feature called “Sucks @ Driving” (and the implied corollary “and Probably Sucks at Life”). I have to navigate downtown DC traffic as well as I495 traffic in Northern Virginia to get to and from work. In the course of my travels, I often encounter people who do amazingly stupid things on the roads that defy rational behavior. I feel the need to chronicle these incidents. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to add pictures.

So my first Sucks @ Driving award goes to Maryland plate 17R-868, which is a large green pickup truck. As I drove down 17th Street today, I was about to pass 17R-868 on the left when she (I verified it was a she) pulled out into my lane and almost nailed me. That in itself is not that unusual. But the reason she did this was NOT just because she was a jerk, but because her driver’s side view mirror had been folded-in (usually to avoid people from hitting you while parked). She was driving around with a pretty crucial mirror totally unusable. And it’s not hard to fix, just roll down the window, push it back out, and voila, no more almost ramming into people.

But I’m guessing she just felt that since she had a big truck, she could do whatever she wants, mirrors be dammed.
